Central Park, Perimeter

Design: Masonry construction of has long been a hallmark of the Korean garden tradition. Central Park’s perimeter and interior retaining walls pay homage to this custom by integrating a number of traditional elements into more modern and diverse masonry iterations.  Traditional materials such as raised mortar joints, Pocheon Granite, and wall openings are taken as base components and arranged in a number of configurations throughout the park in response to varying site conditions.  Traversing the park perimeter, one sees the elemental components transfigured as chairs, planters, waterfalls, paving patterns, and sculptural monoliths. For example, the primary entrances along the south end of Central Park are flanked by pairs of monumental sculptures honoring each of the Korean trigrams symbolizing earth, water, fire, and sky.

Role:  Expanded and refined initial conceptual ideas into fully developed construction documents.
