Central Park, Stone Passage

Design:  Entering from busy city streets, visitors pass through this dramatic passage emerging into a densely wooded portion of the park.  Inspired by the abstractions found in traditional Korean scroll paintings, the Stone Passage uses carefully laid granite slabs to evoke the mountainous typology of the Korean landscape.  Unlike the more formal park entrances, the Stone Passage mimics natural rock outcroppings, setting the stage for the meandering paths in the Mountain Strolling Garden that lay beyond.

Role:  Expanded and refined initial conceptual ideas into fully developed construction documents.
